Lily is the common name for many showy flowering plants, most precisely those in the genus Lilium, celebrated for large, architecturally shaped blooms and a fragrance that can perfume an entire room. True lilies belong to the family Liliaceae and the genus Lilium, a group of about 80–110 accepted species depending on botanical authority. They are monocots, meaning their leaves typically show parallel veins and their floral parts are usually arranged in threes.
It helps to separate “true lilies” from lookalikes: the popular Daylily is in the genus Hemerocallis (family Asphodelaceae), not Lilium. Likewise, “lily” can refer to unrelated plants in everyday speech, but Lilium is the taxonomic anchor for the classic bulb-forming lilies used in gardens and floristry.
A lily typically grows from a scaly bulb (not a tunic like an onion), sending up a single unbranched stem with narrow to lance-shaped leaves arranged alternately or in whorls. Lilies are nectar and pollen resources for a range of insects, and some species are adapted to nocturnal moth pollination, pairing pale tepals with strong evening fragrance.
