Snow Leopard is a large, mountain-dwelling cat adapted to life above the tree line across Central and South Asia. It is notable for its thick, pale-grey coat, long balancing tail, and ability to thrive in thin air and extreme cold, often between about 3,000 and 5,500 m elevation.
Unlike many other Big cats (Panthera) species, the snow leopard is typically solitary and elusive, making it difficult to survey accurately. Its presence is also ecologically important because it helps regulate populations of wild mountain ungulates in fragile alpine ecosystems.
The snow leopard’s scientific name is Panthera uncia. Once placed in its own genus (Uncia), genetic evidence supports its placement within Panthera, closely related to other big cats while retaining unique high-altitude adaptations.
Adult snow leopards typically weigh 22–55 kg (about 49–121 lb), with males generally heavier than females. Head-and-body length is usually 75–130 cm, and the thick, expressive tail adds another 80–105 cm, giving the animal exceptional balance on cliffs.
The coat is dense and woolly with dark rosettes that camouflage against rock and snow, and the paws are broad like natural “snowshoes.” Snow leopards also have enlarged nasal cavities and powerful chest muscles, helping them function in cold, oxygen-poor environments.
As a performance hallmark, snow leopards are renowned for leaping across steep terrain, with reported jumps of up to 15 m in a single bound. Their long tail acts as both a counterbalance for agility and a wraparound “scarf” when resting in subzero temperatures.
Snow leopards occupy rugged mountains across roughly a dozen countries in Asia, favoring steep cliffs, broken rocky slopes, and alpine shrublands. They are strongly associated with the Himalayas and extend across high ranges and plateaus including the Tibetan Plateau.
Preferred habitat commonly sits above forests and below the highest permanent ice, where prey is available and terrain offers cover for stalking. Seasonal movements occur in some areas, with cats tracking prey to lower elevations in winter and returning higher in summer as conditions shift.
Snow leopards are ambush predators that rely on stealth and terrain rather than long chases. They commonly prey on mountain ungulates such as blue sheep (bharal), ibex, argali, and tahr, and they also take marmots, hares, and birds when available.
They are mostly solitary, with adults maintaining overlapping home ranges that can span tens to hundreds of square kilometers depending on prey density and habitat quality. Snow leopards are crepuscular in many regions, concentrating activity around dawn and dusk, but they may shift schedules to avoid humans.
Communication is subtle: scent marking, scraping, and soft vocalizations help individuals advertise presence in expansive landscapes. Females usually raise 1–3 cubs, and young may remain with their mother for up to about 18–22 months before dispersing.
The snow leopard is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List (status set in 2017). Total wild population is commonly estimated at roughly 4,000–6,500 mature individuals, though uncertainty remains high because the species is hard to detect across remote terrain.
Major threats include illegal killing and trade, retaliatory persecution after livestock losses, and declining prey in some areas due to overhunting and habitat pressures. Poaching can target snow leopards directly for pelts and bones, or indirectly through depletion of prey species.
Conflict with people is a major driver of mortality, especially where herding expands into key habitat and corrals are vulnerable to night raids; this is a classic example of Human–wildlife conflict. Conservation efforts include anti-poaching patrols, prey restoration, improved livestock enclosures, community insurance or compensation schemes, and transboundary cooperation in mountain landscapes.
In terms of longevity, snow leopards typically live about 10–12 years in the wild, while individuals can reach 15–21 years in captivity with veterinary care and consistent food access. Protecting connected habitat corridors is especially important because low population density and large home ranges make local extinctions hard to reverse.
