Mountain Gorilla is a large, ground-dwelling great ape and the best-known high-altitude form of the Eastern gorilla. It lives in two isolated populations in Central Africa and is notable for its dense fur, strong family bonds, and intense conservation focus.
Unlike the Western gorilla of lowland forests, Mountain Gorilla groups occupy cooler montane and bamboo habitats where nights can be cold and wet. Long-term field research and ecotourism have made it one of the most closely monitored wild great apes.
Mountain Gorilla is a subspecies of the Gorilla genus, with the scientific name Gorilla beringei beringei. It is one of two subspecies of Gorilla beringei (the eastern gorilla), distinct from Gorilla gorilla (the western gorilla).
Genetic and anatomical studies support its separation from lowland gorillas, especially in skull shape, tooth size, and adaptations to a diet rich in fibrous vegetation. Its small total range also contributes to distinctive population structure and conservation management.
Adult male Mountain Gorillas (“silverbacks”) commonly weigh about 140–195 kg (310–430 lb), while adult females typically weigh around 70–100 kg (154–220 lb). Head-and-body length is usually about 1.2–1.8 m (4.0–5.9 ft), and adult standing height is roughly 1.4–1.7 m (4.6–5.6 ft).
Their arms are longer than their legs, supporting knuckle-walking and powerful climbing when needed. A key distinguishing feature is their thick, long coat—especially on the back and shoulders—helping them cope with temperatures that can drop near freezing at high elevations.
Male “silvering” begins as they mature, with pale hair spreading across the back and hips, signaling dominance and breeding status. Like other great apes, they have individual nose-print patterns, useful for identification in field studies.
Mountain Gorillas occur in two separated strongholds: the Virunga Mountains (spanning parts of Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo) and Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. These areas include montane forest, bamboo zones, and subalpine vegetation, generally between about 2,200 and 4,300 m (7,200–14,100 ft) elevation.
Groups move through overlapping home ranges in response to seasonal food availability, often feeding in forest clearings and along dense herbaceous slopes. Because the habitat is naturally fragmented by altitude, steep terrain, and human land use around park boundaries, corridors and cross-border protection are essential.
Mountain Gorillas are primarily herbivorous, eating leaves, shoots, stems, bark, roots, and seasonal fruit when available. Adults can spend 4–6 hours per day feeding, processing large volumes of fibrous plants that require strong jaws and large molars.
They live in cohesive social groups typically led by one dominant silverback, with multiple females and their offspring; group sizes often range from 5 to 20+ individuals, though larger groups can occur. The silverback coordinates travel, mediates conflicts, and provides defense, often using displays—chest beating, vocalizations, and short bluff charges—rather than physical fighting.
Daily travel distances are usually modest (often under 1 km on many days), reflecting abundant local vegetation and the energetic costs of moving uphill. Lifespan is generally about 35–40 years in the wild, with individuals reaching 45–50 years in captivity under excellent veterinary care.
Mountain Gorilla is listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List (most recently assessed in 2018 for Gorilla beringei beringei). Thanks to intensive protection and monitoring, the total wild population is estimated at roughly 1,063 individuals (based on late-2010s census results, widely cited in current conservation reporting).
Despite growth, the subspecies remains highly vulnerable because it lives in a tiny range and in just two populations. Major threats include respiratory disease transmission from humans, habitat pressure around park borders, snares set for other wildlife, political instability in parts of the range, and the long-term risks of climate and land-use change.
Conservation success has depended on anti-poaching patrols, veterinary intervention, community revenue-sharing from tourism, and cross-border coordination. The work of researchers and advocates—most famously Dian Fossey—helped catalyze global attention, though modern programs emphasize collaborative approaches with local communities and national wildlife authorities.
